First Results from the BELLE DIRC Prototype
نویسنده
چکیده
The DIRC (Detection of Internally Reflected Cerenkov light) is a new type of ring imaging Cerenkov detector, which detects images from Cerenkov light produced in precisely machined quartz bars. The Cerenkov images are transported along several meters of bar to the edge of the detector where they are proximity focussed unto an array of conventional photomultiplier tubes. Results from a prototype device comprising a 2× 4× 240 cm quartz bar read by an array of 480 PMT’s are presented. Sample images, which are the first observed in this type of detector, are shown. Measurements of the light yield (approximately 20 photoelectrons per image) and the angular resolution are in good agreement with Monte Carlo predictions. † Corresponding author: E-mail [email protected]

Detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light, results from the BELLE DIRC prototype
The DIRC (Detector of Internally Reflected Cherenkov light) is a new type of ring imaging Cherenkov detector which utilizes precisely machined quartz bars as Cherenkov radiators. Bar quality is determined by both laser and cosmic ray measurements. The Cherenkov photons are transported several meters along the bar until they reach the detector cavity where they are proximity focussed on an array...
متن کاملTest of a Large Scale Prototype of the DIRC, a Cerenkov Imaging Detector based on Total Internal Reflection for BABAR at PEP-II*
The principles of the DIRC ring imaging Cerenkov technique are brie y explained and its choice for the BABAR detector particle identi cation system is motivated. A large scale prototype of the DIRC for the BABAR experiment is then described. Details of the design of this prototype and its test in a hadronic particle beam at the CERN-PS are presented, and results from various prototype and test ...
متن کاملDIRC , a Newt Type of Particle Identification System for BABAR *
The DIRC, a new type of Cherenkov imaging device, has been selected as the primary particle identification system for the BABAR detector at the asymmetric B-factory, PEP-II. It is based on total internal reflection and uses long, rectangular barsmade from synthetic fused silica as Cherenkov radiators and light guides. In this paper, the principles of the DIRC ring imaging Cherenkov technique ar...
متن کاملTest of a Conceptual Prototype of the Total Internal Reflection Cherenkov Imaging Detector (DIRC) with Cosmic Muons∗
The DIRC is a totally internally reflecting Cherenkov imaging detector proposed for particle identification at the asymmetric e+e− B factories. First test results from a conceptual prototype using cosmic muons are reported. The photo-electron yield and the single Cherenkov photon resolution at various track dip angles and positions along the radiator bar have been measured. The results are cons...
متن کاملProtecting QDI interconnects from transient faults using delay-insensitive redundant check codes
Asynchronous circuit design is a promising technology for large-scale multi-core systems. As a family of asynchronous circuits, Quasi-delay-insensitive (QDI) circuits have been widely used to build chip-level long interconnects due to their tolerance to delay variations. However, QDI interconnects are vulnerable to faults. Traditional fault-tolerant techniques for synchronous circuits cannot be...
